Resumo: Based on the assumption that the toponym is closely related to the environment it names, this work aimed to describe ergotoponymy in Minas Gerais – in the case of toponyms that present aspects related to material culture as the main motivational factor. Thus, to base this work, we used the theoretical and methodological budgets of Dick (1990 a,b) and Seabra (2004, 2006), on Onomastics and toponymic motivation, and Coseriu (1977) and Abbade ( 2009, 2012, 2015) on the Theory of Lexical Fields. Using the database of the ATEMIG Project – Toponymic Atlas of the State of Minas Gerais, to collect our objects of study, we analyzed 3094 ergotoponyms. In this way, two methodological procedures served to organize the data through two perspectives: prepared, in lexicographic sheets – as toponyms, and, later, in lexical fields – as lexias, constituting a secret of material culture in Minas Gerais protected in six macrofields lexicals. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of the ergotoponyms studied allowed us to highlight the main motivators of material culture in the act of naming places in Minas Gerais, highlighting the toponym “Engenho” as the most productive. As a lexia, the lexical macrofield of the instruments, integrating the microfield of the instruments of great structure and production, stood out as the most significant. In general, the results explained the rural scenario in Minas Gerais, reflected and preserved through toponymy.
