Resumo: Innovations play a crucial role in the productive capacity of enterprises and, consequently, in their ability to survive and dominate the market. For this reason, intellectual property ends up emerging as one of the most important assets in the market, given its ability to guarantee holders the right of ownership and acknowledgment for their innovations. In this context, a business model that has been standing out in Brazil and Minas Gerais for its innovative and entrepreneurial bias are the startups. However, due to problems related to the lack of capital for investments; the location of the companies' installation, and mainly management problems, startups have high mortality rates. This situation highlights the role of business incubators in innovation ecosystems. Incubators are institutions that work to help and structure early-stage ventures, such as startups, aiming at mitigating corporate mortality, including through intellectual property management-oriented services. Despite the performance of incubators, Minas Gerais does not have a method for analyzing and monitoring the intellectual property generated by startups that have undergone incubation processes. This situation prevents a correct assessment of incubation programs in the state. It is precisely in this field that this study focuses, aiming at understanding how intellectual property management by graduated startups in Minas Gerais works. The methodology used in this study has a mixed focus (quantitative and qualitative), using as a case study the graduated startups ecosystem of Minas Gerais. It was found, through this study, a considerable increase in the use of the intellectual property system by startups that went through the incubation process in Minas Gerais, compared to the national average of startups. However, it appears that this higher use of the intellectual property system does not reflect the real intellectual property knowledge-transfer from the incubators to the startups, given the high rates of initial problems in filing for registration, corroborated even by the low-rate of patents internationalization. This situation expresses a more general role of the incubators on the topic, not transferring, in general, enough knowledge to promote strategies for managing intellectual property within incubated startups. This study, in addition, contributes through a mapping about the sectorial profile and graduation locus of these companies, dialoguing with role-model startups in the incorporation of intellectual property management.
