Background: The metalinguistic skills and their implications on the acquisition of reading and writing are the target of interest mainly from the 1970s. Among the metalinguistic skills stands the ability syntactic. Purpose: To review the literature, since 1971, through books and articles on the subject to provide information to speech therapist, health professionals and teachers about the abilities syntactic since this is a skill still poorly studied. Conclusion: Over the course of child development, language plays a role in structuring of social communication and also allows the child to formal languageacquisition, including the syntax, which seem to be relevant for their role predictor of success in learning to read and writing.
