Resumo: | Six male and six female calves, seven months old, averaging 168,04 kg of liveweight (Lw) and 12 primiparous cows averaging 365,25 kg of liveweight, grazing Brachiaria decumbens, were used to compare the efficacy of two external markers: chromic oxide (Cr2O3) and purified and enriched lignin (LIPE®) dosed simultaneously once a day to predict dry matter intake (DMI). For both, Cr2O3 and LIPE®, there were no differences in DMI attributable to sex. However, for all parameters studied, when the comparisons were made between Cr2O3 and LIPE®, the estimates obtained with LIPE® were higher (p<0,05). For the calves, forage DMI (kg); total DMI (kg); DMI as percentage of Lw and DMI in relation to metabolic weight (g/kg Lw0,75) were 4,50 and 2,03; 5,18 and 2,71; 3,10 and 1,62; 111,32 and 58,10 for LIPE® and Cr2O3 respectively. For the cows, the values were 9,79 and 6,13; 2,71 and 1,70; 118,19 and 73,85 for total DMI (kg), DMI as percentage of Lw and DMI in relation to metabolic weight (g/kg Lw0,75). These results suggest that estimates derived from LIPE® gave a better fit with the dry matter requirements of the animals. |
