Resumo: | The purpose of this work was to assess the profile and the oral health status in an elderly population, trying to understand how this status are felt and assessed by the elderly and how they can interfere in the quality of life of these people. Methods: This epidemiological study was carried out in a philanthropic institution that shelters elderly, located in Belo Horizonte. Results are based on epidemiological inquiries and interviews of 72 elderly to check the main needs of oral treatment. A questionnaire with questions about the needs of oral treatment, the self-perception of oral status and the possible impact of these conditions in the quality of life was applied in 45 elderly. Results: The clinical examination revealed a precarious chart of oral health, with about 4,8 teeth presented by subject; CPO D about 29,9; 56,9% of edentulism; prosthetics in bad conservation and a great necessity to change the prosthetics; 35% presented mucous lesions; 43% insufficient oral hygiene; and among people that have teeth, 54,8% need restorative and 93,5% need periodontal treatment. There was a great discrepancy between the necessity observed (professional assessment) and the felt necessity (assessment of the patient). 60% of the interviewees believed that they didnt need oral treatment and 66,67% thought positively about their oral health. Related to quality of life, 75% were affected by one of the studied topics (oral pain, esthetic, chewing and social living). However, the presence of the psychosocial impact there also wasnt any association with the subjects self-perception. Conclusion: The failing perception of the oral problems makes these people face the psychosocial impacts like an inevitable consequence of the age, different from a problem that can be corrected. The complete adaptation to these restrictions becomes these people resigned and indifferent to the bad conditions of their oral status. |
