Resumo: This study evaluates the influence of mortar type and form of surfacepreparation on the performance of the textured paint coating applied over it. The properties evaluated were the bonding strength and permeability. Three types of mortar were applied over ceramic block (brick) masonry: an industry-product, called (IND), a 1:6 sand-cement ratio (by volume) called (16) and a 1:1:6 hydrated-cement lime-sand ratio (by volume) called (116). Each mortar panel was divided into three control groups: the use, or not, and the type of sealer. On the 1st panel a primer was used on the walls, on the 2nd a sealer composed made of diluted texture was used and on the 3rd panel the sealer was not used. The bond strength was evaluated through pull-off tests, both for the mortar as well as the top layer of the paint. The permeability of paint was evaluated with the pipe test, recommended by the CSTC (1982). The results indicated a strongrelationship between the quality of the mortar and the mechanical properties of the layer of the paint, and the importance of correct specifications of the system of the mortar and systems.
