Resumo: The integrated Contracting is one of the innovations of the new Brazilian Bidding System put in place in 2011 aiming at making public bidding faster, efficient and with a lower cost. There are just a few research studies encompassing the method from design to integration. Within this context, the goal of this paper was to investigate in what measure the Integrated Contracting allows the development of processes that look similar to the Design-Build practices, as well as the possibility of implementing the concepts of Concurrent Engineering in the integration of the many steps of design and construction. In order to achieve the goal of this paper, it was applied a study case with the objective of understanding and describe part of the process of a highway duplication project in Brazil. The study case considered many interviews with specialists with regards to the endeavor object of this study, as well as the assessment of the specialists’ opinion on the processes of Integrated Contracting. The results point to a perception of the advantage of the Integrated Contracting with regards to conducting complex projects which creates opportunities for the application of the concept of Concurrent Engineering. Yet, the simple application of the legal framework does not guarantee those benefits, requiring a set of actions in order to have contractual rules to support the effective integration, and formalization of specific workflows as well as the use of information technology. From this point on, a set of recommendations was defined to improving future biddings within a model which integrates both design and construction.
