Resumo: This study aimed at knowing the influence of supervised internship in the formation of dental students at UFMG. Based on qualitative methodology data collection used the focal group technique. Sample size was of fifteen students which took place in groups before and after finishing the discipline. After data evaluation four great themes emerged: expectations and internship process, public health service and understanding of the health and disease process. It was concluded that supervised internship was seen as a transition between academic and professional lives; little attention given to social sciences and the public health service in previous graduation semesters made the students insertion in the health service harder; low living standards of the population and the existence of an organized and efficient health system was faced with surprise by the students, and that experiences undertaken during internship had wakened them up for patient attention based on warm welcome and health care.
