The following work intends to analyse how the teaching and literature production of private law took place in the law academies of the Empire. First of all it offers information about the foundation of law schools in Brazil. Then, it indicates the main data about the carrier and production of the professors who occupied the private law chairs in the first two Schools. Last of all, it takes into consideration the quality andeffectualness both of the teaching as well as of the bibliographical issue of private law in the above place and period.
