Resumo: Ecuador is facing the fertility transition. The low levels motivate the investigation of the transition process in a different perspective, in which aspects that are not explicit in the traditional measures, such as tempo effect related to changes in the mean age of childbearing between two periods and the parity composition effect resulting from the changes in the fertility composition by birth order. The main objective of this study is to estimate tempo and parity composition effects for Ecuador in the 1996-2010 period, based on the model developed by Kohler and Ortega (KO Model). Data come from the 2010 Demographic Census reconstructed birth stories. Results indicate that the in fertility decline in Ecuador was accompanied by a negative tempo effect and a positive parity composition effect, both acting in order to inflate fertility. It means that in the absence of these effects, fertility drop would have been stronger. By the end of the period, there is a reversal in tempo effect, suggesting that it is possible that Ecuador is facing the fertility postponement. If this tendency persists, fertility decline in the coming years will be more pronounced.
