This research proposes a reflection on the activity of design - especially the design of furniture - in the contemporary. In order to investigate the relevance of design furniture in the quality of living space, this work examines the situation of the furniture inside the popular houses. This research investigates the hypothesis that there is a mismatch between the furniture and the architectural space supplied for poor people. To verify this hypothesis, the research was conducted in a low income village in the city of Belo Horizonte. The objective was to list the furniture used in the popular housing as well as documenting the position in theinterior area and ascertain the type of use they have in the home. The results indicate the existence of a real mismatch between the furniture and architectural spaces offered to the low income population. The analysis of collected data allowed to classify the popular residentialarea, proving the hypothesis investigated. It is intended with this work, contribute to the discussion on the integration of design activity of popular furniture with the popular architecture developed in Brazil and, specifically, in Belo Horizonte.
