Resumo: The materials gathered and sorted by collectors of recyclable materials is usually of low value. This islargely due to inefficiencies in the separation of the materials collected. The distribution of value along the recycling chain is unfavorable to recyclables collectors, a factor thatcontributes to the low pay they receive for precarious work. Several strategies have been employed in an attempt to secure better living conditions for the collectors and strengthen the sustainability of their associations. One alternative has been to deal directly with themanufacturing companies, because part of the value of the work of separating the material is appropriated by middlemen who buy from the collectors and sell to the industry. The manual for the standardization of recyclable materials developed by SEBRAE-MG helps to make the CAs more profitable. The catalog offers technical support of aligning separation methods with the demands of the market. Individually associations, however, have different production abilities to meet industry demand and varying quality standards, since they tend to separate the material according to the criteria of the following link in the recycling chain. A realignmentof the recycling chain to make it more favorable to collectors requires, therefore, a change in the way the associations work. The way in which the recycling chain currently is established along with the complex contractual arrangements in place all have a bearingon the ability of associations to reach their production targets, and this produces a series of challenges . Associations must be able to meet certain requirements and deadlines in order to market their product directly to the industry, while maintaining quality standards. This studyaims to identify the necessary conditions under which associations can deal directly with the industry. Areas discussed include logistics of distribution, organization of work and production, payment options, network marketing, deadlines, working capital. The study methods usedinclude analysis of activity, data gathering on the associations organizations and their positions in the recycling chain, identification of factors that influence the decisions related to recyclables sorting. A study ofthe obstacles to meeting the standards outlined in the catalog ofstandardization of recyclable materials prepared by SEBRAE-MG in partnership with the nucleus Alternativas de ECOSOL UFMG.
