Resumo: This masters thesis analyzes whether household socioeconomic levels and city-level social conditions are associated with the risk of dying of young Brazilians aged 15 to 29 years old. We use Brazilian 2010 census data to investigate this question. We use three level hierarchical logistic models to understand how variables related to each level of analysis (household, municipality and province) affects the risk of youth mortality. The results indicate that mortality differentials are observed due to differences incity-level and state-level living conditions. However, the main effect, was observed for household socioeconomic status. Furthermore, the characteristics of household heads as race and sex are also related to the incidence of youth mortality. With respect to the differentials in municipal levels, we observe an inverse relationship between living conditions and the chances of observing a youth death in the household. Finally, we find that households in the worse conditions life have higher risks of reporting the young as located in municipalities with better living conditions as well as in poorer cities.
