Resumo: | The thesis starts from the analysis of the novels The Star of Satan (1926) and The diary of a country priest (1936), by Georges Bernanos, and, above all, of the concepts of boredom, death and holiness that are developed and presented as the foundation of his narrative. The concept of the Catholic novel is analyzed considering Bernanos' belonging to the new Catholic intelligentsia that emerged in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This analysis is based on the author's contemporary French literary criticism, which links his work to a religious dogmatism, but which proves to be insufficient, given the complexity of the categorization “Catholic novel”. Therefore, there is a need to secularize this critique and insert Bernanos' work in the so-called critique of modernity. Based on this approach, it is possible to relate boredom, a fundamental concept in his work, which is developed by Svendsen, with the concept of crisis in Benjamin's experience. It opens the possibility of relating Bernanos' two novels with existentialism, supported by the works of Kierkegaard, Unamuno and Sartre's humanist existentialism. The concepts of anguish, faith and hope are contrasted in two different aspects, as well as their relationship with modernity. To better understand Georges Bernanos' perspective on this period, we turn to some of his essays, as well as his vision of religiosity present in other of his novels. It is revealed from the testimonies of the protagonists of both novels. From the experience of these men of faith, boredom is also related to Girard's concept of sacrificial crisis. In the work of Georges Bernanos, there are only two alternatives to boredom: death and holiness. As the two trajectories are unbearable, the result is the suspension of faith, which allows reinforcing the scope of Bernanos' work with the critique of modernity and existentialism, greatly expanding the concept of the Catholic novel. |
