Resumo: Expert machinists usually have lower absense from work as well as less musculoskeletal complanints when compared to einexperienced ones. Experts with more experience in their working tasks suffer less working demnds by using its knowledge, regulations and skills in the management of the variations of activities as well as how to use better their bodies. This research presented the causation factors of the illness/complaints and the underlying factors that resulted in a larger physical work load in the activity of the machinist. This was necessary due to a demand requested from the company with regards to the high levels of absenteeism of operators in the wiring due to the musculosleletal conditions. The study design chosen was an ergonomic analysis of the work envirnment and the utilization of tools to describe the real conditions of work envirnment. Systematic observations, self-confrotation interviews and standardized questionnaires were also used. The study was carried out in a textile industry in Minas Gerais. A discrepancy between the absenteeism levels and the real number of people who has complaints related to their work was observed. It was also found a direct relationship among the number of operators with pain complaints, the use of the manual machines, with the repetition of gestures when using low-quality cotton of low and with the reduced time at moments of peak production. During these moments, a loss of regulation due to the requirements of the activity was observed. The machinist changed its operative in a way to achieve the production goals and as a consequence deteriorates its body by working beyond of its physiological capacities
