Resumo: This study aimed to discuss the many relations among the library history, the education of librarians (especially the Brazilian ones) and the universe of the human cultural practices. For this, part of the library history was reconstructed intending to gather traces that could confirm its functionality as a place of memory, culture, education and reading, which are cultural practices that help men to create meaning to the surrounding world. It was also aimed to describe the library professional as an historical agent that supports the process of social construction of reality by means of active participation in all the stages that constitute the informational cycle. Looking for theoretical support, besides defining cultural practices as symbolic manifestations that are devised to consider the things of the world in an interpretative way, this research emphasizes that none of them are complete in themselves, therefore needing material elements to acquire meaning and visibility. Grounded on this perspective, it was noticed that such materiality functions as an historical link between the cultural practices and the libraries. Inquiring in what degree the libraries, particularly the public libraries, contribute to the effectiveness of those practices, this study highlighted the librarian role and rediscussed the attributes of their duties. For this, the image of the humanistic librarian and his/her roll of caretaker of the secrets kept in the library were presented to be, eventually, in the course of historical evolution, inserted in the group of the Modern Information Professionals, who participate actively in all the informational cycle stages and are intimate with information technology. Nevertheless, what was meant to be emphasized is that, independent of the historical context in which it is put, the librarian profession is distinguished by pondering critically the activities of collecting, organizing, preserving and disseminating the material signs that form our intellectual patrimony. Which is the profile of the librarian that the present Brazilian librarianship courses aim to form? And to what degree their curriculums encompass subjects related to cultural practices in practical and theoretical terms? Aiming to solve these two more disquieting issues, this study accomplished, as a methodological resource, the analysis of the course listings of five librarianship courses in the country in order to identify the main policies that guide the students' education. This analysis was useful to point out the main theoretical-practical approach adopted by the present Brazilian librarianship teaching system and the profile of the librarian it produces. After data were analyzed, it was possible to remark that the mentioned system opted to form professionals technically able to process and manage the collections preserved in information units (and this is an historical trait), with detriment to the development of the ability to understand critically the importance of their role in the process of constructing the many human action spheres. It was possible, also, to stress the importance of new studies to review the parameters that guide this model of education.
