This paper consists basically of a diachronic analysis of the pronoun se in Portuguese, with the hypothesis that its trajectory may be dealt with as a grammaticalization process. Thus, this analysis aims to investigate how the pronoun se behaves throughout the history of the Portuguese language regarding its frequency, as well as its syntactical and semantic characteristics. For such, the theoretical framework adopted is the one proposed by Hopper & Traugott (1993) and Heine et al. on grammaticalization, as well as the methodology developed by Vianna (2000) and Vitral (2005). Based on the results of the analysis made, I intend to verify whether or not the historical course of thepronoun se could be dealt as a case of grammaticalization.
