Resumo: The objective of this dissertation is to identify and describe as occurrences of public programs, projects and local initiatives for conservation and rational use of water in rural communities in the municipalities of Turmalina and Minas Novas. In order to reach the objectives, the qualitative and quantitative techniques used in the field research were used in this study, through the use of semi-structured questionnaires and data collection by means of documents made available by the institutions. The study was developed in the municipalities of Turmalina and Minas Novas, Vale do Jequitinhonha region. In total, during the first phase of surveying the programs, projects and initiatives, 18 interviews were carried out. And, in the second, with the objective of obtaining in-depth information on public water policies in said municipalities, 20 interviews were conducted. Given the profound asymmetries in the distribution and access to rural drinking water and the reduced quantitative rainfall, the results show that the effectiveness of the local programs, projects and initiatives identified in rural communities point to the rationalization of this social good in a competent and rigorous However, the actions, jointly developed by public entities, associations, unions and civil society, stand out in the municipalities, mainly in strengthening the democratization of access and use of water. The results also indicate that the effects of these actions are important for the balance of supply and demand of water in the communities studied, especially in the connection between social technologies for access and use of water for domestic consumption and social technologies directed to water supply in productive processes of families. Therefore, local programs, projects and initiatives for the conservation and rational use of water have surpassed expectations since water itself has a power that goes beyond consumption, becomes a unifying element in the strengthening of communities and in reconstruction and consolidation of the institutions that operate in the municipalities studied
