The aim of the presented work was to understand the reasons that impede, motivate and support the adoption of environmental criteria by companies who are in the civil construction sector, through the construction of reference typology. From the literature review, indicators were generated for the types of companies that adopt or don't adopt the criteria and afterwards interviews were made with professionals and companies that represented the defined types. A deeper understanding of the phenomena made it possible to comprehend that it is necessary that the people involved have a multidisciplinary look so that they can have a better understanding of the strategical, tactical and operational objectives of the companies towards sustainability. The results have made it possible to present a model that demonstrates the role, responsibility and weight on decision making of organizational levels throughout a project. This model has become a tool to aid designers, architects, engineers and administrators in their training for the insertion of processes and practices that efficiently promote sustainability in their projects.
