Resumo: This dissertation deals with the study of music in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal movement. It aimed to understand through an ethnomusicological analysis characteristic aspects of the uses and functions of music in this context the experience of religiosity. This study focused on the prayer group Emanuel III, belonging to the parish of Our Lady of Good Voyage, Belo Horizonte - MG. The study of musical experience within this movement can be justified due to the centrality of music of the uses and functions of music that the religious experience of context. In this sense, it has become important to include an investigation into the dialogue between tradition and present, and about the meanings of music making within that cultural context. The methodology of study adopted a qualitative approach. As to the theoretical and methodological basis of the research, it conducted a bibliographic study in the field of ethnomusicology, and considering the interdisciplinary nature of this discipline, this approach also enabled the dialogue with bibliographies from other areas of study such as anthropology, religious studies, as well as the literature on the Catholic Charismatic Renewal developed both by members of this movement, and by academic researchers. In this research, I conducted an ethnographic study, by taking part in the Emanuel III prayer group environment in order to better understand and interpret the symbolism, language and meanings related to music making within this religious context. In the prayer group Emanuel III, the musical action, carried out with songs, prayers with instrumental accompaniment, gestures and choreography, seeks through different ways to always propose the function of being a contact with the divine, which happens with the collective construction of the music and the intervention of the actions of the Holy Spirit interpreted by the music ministry. The music making of Emanuel III prayer group provides musical interrelations, religious and social. In addition, the music acts directly in the process of adding faithful both to participation in the group, and for the collective construction of music. In this context, social practices and ideological views are shared, generating aggregation between people and the sense of belonging to the group and movement.
