Resumo: | Population aging is a widespread global phenomenon. With advancing age, due to immunosenescence, there is an increase of two to four times the plasma levels of acute phase proteins and proinflammatory cytokines. High levels of proinflammatory cytokines are inversely related to mass and muscle strength and functional performance. The present study, an observational cross-sectional design, investigated the correlation between inflammatory mediators, muscular and functional performance of elderly community. Two hundred and twenty one elderly of the community with a mean age of 71.07 ± 4.93 years participated in the sample. Multidimensional structured questionnaire was used to record sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of participants. Plasma concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and the soluble receptor tumor necrosis factor alpha (sTNFR1) were determined by Enzyme-Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay (ELISA). The muscle performance of knee flexors and extensors was measured by isokinetic dynamometer Biodex System 3 Pro® and the assessment of handgrip strength was performed using the Jamar dynamometer® (Sammons Preston, Illinois), PC5030JI model. Functional performance was assessed through the test of walking speed on a ten-meter distance. Statistical analysis was performed using the coefficient of Pearson or Spearman correlation according to data normality. For all analyzes we adopted a significance level of 5%. In the analysis of the linearity between the variables, plasma levels of IL-6 (0,87 pg/ml) significantly positive correlated with the power of the knee extensor (r=0,14; p=0,03) and power of knee flexors (r=0,16, p=0,01), the plasma levels of sTNFR1 (1051.70 pg/ml) did not correlate with any dependent variable. We conclude that plasma levels of IL-6 found no adverse repercussions so muscular and functional performance in elderly women. The IL-6 correlated positively and significantly with the isokinetic variables power knee flexors and extensors. The plasma levels of sTNFR1 not correlated with any variable dependent, however, the adverse effects on peripheral muscle function and function of this cytokine may be the long term |
