Resumo: The issue on the growing elderly population in Brazil has resulted in heavy discussion over the impact of aging in a social context due to the growing importance given to younger looks by most communication channels. The aim of this research is to learn the senses presently exposed in womens magazines on feminine aging. Such a choice was made due to the understanding that, in our society many socially constructed senses are conveyed through media channels, and amongst these, womens magazines which, by representing a sociologically defined publication for a specific segment of society; in this case women, presents a relevant discursive universe with the pulverization of determined knowledges in regards to female themes. By means of documental research, 13 issues of Cláudia magazine and 12 issues of Tpm, were analyzed, reaching a total of 107 articles both published during the periods of July 2008 and July 2009. The content analysis permitted for awareness of three basic nucleuses of sense, related to beauty, work, and functionality, respectively. It was also noted that the factors related to beauty and the body were most relevant in the construction of representations of womens aging; especially those associated to the premises of shopping culture, which identifies in youth the corollary of beauty, and in policies of body shaping the medical focus of beauty. Parallel to the elements of the norm in the aesthetics sphere, other senses are linked to aging, mainly in the labor area, associating itself to the maintenance of work capacity, and in the functional domain characterizing the homeostatic competence of this life stage in continuity to previous life stages. Furthermore, the analysis of subject material in the pages of Tpm on the signs of aging shows a clear differentiation when compared to the content published on the pages of Claudia, in regards to procedures. If in the latter the aesthetic procedures to combat wrinkles for example, are naturalized and indicated to female readers often without questioning, the former depicts positive aspects which relate to life experiences and the maintenance of personal natural characteristics.
