Resumo: | The item "Você" and its cognates are analyzed from newspapers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries from the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in Brazilian Portuguese. We aim to verify if the nominal form "Vossa mercê" and its derivatives (“Você”, “Ancê”, “Mecê”, “Vancê”, “Vacê”, “Vocemecê” “Vossemecê”, “Vossê” and “Ocê”) represent symmetrical or asymmetrical socio-pragmatic relations. We chose the journalistic support, with texts that are part of the collection of the National Library of Rio de Janeiro and are available on the National Digital Newspaper Library website, <http://bndigital.bn.br/hemeroteca-digital/>. We collected a corpus composed of 1120 occurrences of the search terms, in 74 newspapers. Some theories formed the basis for obtaining the results. Sociolinguistics, for example, guided the research, facilitating the analysis of internal and external linguistic elements. Regarding the internal structures of the language, we studied the syntactic function of the terms found in the analyzed structures. Then the person of the verb to which it referred, as well as gender of the authors and characters who produced the sentences. As for the external elements, it became necessary to make use of another theory to explain the data analysis, that is the Power and Solidarity one, which dichotomy is necessary for an understanding of the relationship between the partners and their reference dialogic choices. Thus, the first factor analyzed was hierarchy and the degree of intimacy between the speakers and the type of social relationship between them. The collection and analysis of these elements are essential to the description of genres in which the occurrences were collected, because the description of the texts, its features, support and purpose, could help and clarify the symmetrical or asymmetrical relations involving the use of the terms “Você” and cognates. Therefore, it was necessary to address also the subject and the genre in which each occurrence was found. The analysis of such terms in relation to its internal and external linguistic factors has led to the conclusion that the nominal form “Vossa mercê” and its do not reflect completely socio-pragmatic asymmetries. The terms “Vossa mercê” and “Você” in most of the data found in this study are part of symmetrical relations, and our hypothesis is only partially proved. |
