Resumo: There are several cultural assets at risk, and its documentation, more than just an inventory movement, is a crucial factor in risk management. It is discussed how information science becomes indispensable for the risk management of cultural assets based on the principle that their aspects are relevant information for a potential rescue in case of loss. It was acknowledged that being the major institution which keeps cultural properties in Brazil, the Catholic Church self-organized regarding its structure as well as its acting in behalf of the communities that present cultural properties of the Church’s care. The purpose of this thesis is to preserve cultural properties under the guard of the communities socially involved with the Catholic Church of Brazil. The collection of churches and chapels, preserved by generations, are the main sources of contrabands and illicit traffic of the country’s cultural properties. With that being said, it was recognized as a hypothesis that it would be possible the creation of a digital tool which would favor the documentation process of cultural properties at risk and would guide the communities about the main topics that must be considered to reevaluate an object in case of dissociation or contraband. To that end, this hypothesis was based on bibliographic research about conservation and restoration, in which historical trajectory, heading towards to the anticipation of the deterioration process, such as risk management. It was discussed the documentation as being a part of information science, regarding its definition and assimilation of new technics and technologies. Through this research it has also been learned about the Catholic Church itself, over the research of bibliographical sources and the participant observation method, as well as properties under the Church’s guard with their values, which present themselves as vulnerable. It led to the development of a new smartphone application which aims to register these cultural properties based on the criteria of Object ID and on the cards developed by Interpol’s application ID-Art, connecting the technology inside the smartphones of universal use in today’s society, attending the criteria and required information about the preservation of these cultural properties. Between theory and practice passing through the technical process, the qualitative research method was used to test the proposed tool. The first phase has been developed along with a focus group (which’s sample is a group of young people who are part of a social project) in order to verify if the software attended the expectations. In the following process by doing the required corrections, a structured form was made having as a sample a more specific group, the professionals of the cultural heritage field, receiving proper answers to the qualitative research regarding the expected functions and objectives in the use of the developed application.
