Resumo: | This is a research that investigates the production of summaries as a school practice resulting from the activity of transformation of a given text into another of a new genre (re-textualization). The aim is to draw a picture of the operations involved in that activity. It is inquired to which extent the topic network is maintained. Besides, the various linguistic marks used in establishing coherence between the source textand the school summary are identified and analyzed, as well as the relationships among them. The corpus worked upon comprises 12 school summaries written by junior high Brazilian students (5th to 8th grade) in regular classroom settings. The theoretical framework of this investigation is funded in Textual Linguistics concerning the general aspects of text production, the establishment of the topic network and theoperations involved in the transformation phenomenon of a text into another in the context of writing school summaries. The analysis revealed that students from beginning school levels deal with the source text superficially. Mostly, they copy fragments of that text, while students from the final levels are able to pack information and organize a summary more efficiently. |
