Resumo: Semantic portals emerged like a natural evolution of the traditional web portals and can be seen like information portals which use information representation patterns proposed by W3C for the so called Semantic Web. The ontologies are the basis of this new web portals and they provide better information organization, besides other advantages. The aim of this study is to understand how the use of ontologies promotes the information organization and aggregates value to these portals. To reach this goal, this study investigates the main ontology-based semantic tools existing in cientific literature and develops an ontology wich is a basis for the semantic portal proposal to be used by a university community. After the semantic portal pre-specification, its functional framework is suggested and the semantic functions are presented in details through the use of the previously developed ontology. The investigated semantic tools are used in the proposed portal specification, and illustrative examples, based on the developed ontology, are extracted. With this study it is hoped to contribute for the discussion about the benefits an ontology can bring to a concept organization, promoting the reuse and information sharing in a specific knowledge domain.
