Resumo: This work intends to reflect about the political speech and the action of the bishop D. Silverio Gomes Pimenta, during his bishopric in the diocese of Mariana/MG, between the years 1890- 1922. Our period is situated in the troubled period of establishment and consolidation of the Republic in Brazil, time when the Catholic Church was faced with the separation of the new State and with the claims of secularization of public life undertaken by Brazilian republicans. Starting from the theoretical perspective of political cultures - that is to understand the multiple facets of political, particularly from certain forms of action and behavior in the public sphere, that cannot be explained only by the determination of economic interests, but also by cultural factors such as beliefs, norms and imaginary -, seek examine how aspects of Catholic religion were appropriated by D. Silverio and their allies in the realization of their political practices and representations within the Brazilian Republic. Thus, from the actions of our actors we will try to understand two main aspects: the institutional relationships established between the Catholic Church and the new republican State and the attempts at theoretical and symbolic legitimation maintaining certain Christian values in the conduct of Brazilian public life.
