Resumo: This work presents a study on teaching the discipline Protection of Electric Systems in the Electric Engineering courses of some Brazilian higher education institutions. The dissertation also includes an analysis of the fitness of the teaching process to the protection engineers' professional needs. The study involved a research on the syllabuses of seven institutions, as well as interviews with thirteen working professionals of the electric protection area. Taking as a starting point the data collected in the teaching institutions, a qualitative analysis was made, involving: course credits, prerequisites, teaching methodology, summary and bibliography. It were also collected the main requirements of the interviewees' professional activities. Finally, by confronting the academic perspective with the professional perspective, a teaching proposal was elaborated for the discipline Protection of Electric Systems of the Brazilian undergraduate Electric Engineering courses.
