Resumo: | Introduction: The most gain in bone mass occurs during childhood and adolescence. Celiac disease (CD) may impair bone mineralization. The gluten-free diet prevents and / or reduces this morbidity in these patients. Objective: Compare, through quantitative ultrasound of phalanxes, bone density of children and adolescents with CD on a gluten-free diet and controls. Methods: 31 participants with a diagnosis of CD on a gluten-free diet for at least one year and 31 controls were selected. Patients using drugs, vitamins and dietary supplements were excluded. All participants underwent medical, nutritional, biochemical avaliation and quantitative ultrasound. Results: Due to positive transglutaminase antibody in seven patients with CD, a third group was created - CD without treatment. There were no difference between all groups in relation to gender, calcium intake, sun exposure, physical activity and anthropometric data. Calcium intake was low for all groups. There were no statistical differences between all groups in laboratory tests (calcium, phosphorus and parathyroid hormone), as well as data such as amplitude dependent speed of sound and bone transmission time by quantitative ultrasound. Conclusion: Children and adolescents with CD, on a gluten-free diet for at least one year, have normal bone mineral density assessed by quantitative ultrasound. |
