Resumo: | Individuals who had undergone bariactric surgery often complain of halitosis. However, the relationship between bariatric surgery and halitosis is unknown. That way, the objective of this study is to evaluate and compare the frequency of halitosis between obese individuals before and after bariatric surgery and his possible impact in the quality of life. In that manner, sixty two patients with good oral health and in treatment in obesity ambulatory of Santa Casa Hospital, Belo Horizonte - Brazil, have been selected. Of this sample, 31 were bariatric surgery candidates (control group) and 31 had already undergone this surgery (casegroup). The present study is presented in 3 separate sections as scientific paper. The first paper was a literature review regarding the etiology, diagnostic and classification system of halitosis. The second paper evaluated and compared the halitosis frequency between obese individuals before and after bariatric surgery and his relationship with tongue coating index (TCI), plaque index (PI) and salivary flow rate (SFR). The third paper evaluated the relationship between the self-perception of halitosis, the volatile sulfur compounds concentration in oral cavity and his impact in quality of life. Findings from the present study do not demonstrated any relationship between halitosis and bariatric surgery and not even impact of the self-perception of halitosis in quality of life. However, some findings as the difference between the salivaryflow rates, the vomiting frequency and the capacity of evaluate the self breath between the two groups, pointed that new studies should be conducted to verify this relationship. |
