Resumo: The systematic study of a musical instrument is not a simple task and involves physical and emotional demands which are difficult to be imagined by those who are not engaged in this activity. Researchers acknowledge that such demand may affect the musicians career in a significant way. Given this context, the objective of this study was to investigate the probable causal relationship between the postural physical discomforts and the postural inadequacies of flute performance. Grounded on the concept of posture, this research discusses the fundamental aspects of the biomechanics of posture in both standing and sitting positions. A study of the most common postural imbalances, seeking their causes and consequences, and the transposition of these fundamental aspects to the biomechanics of posture during flute performance were made. This study was conducted in three steps: Step 1 - a questionnaire to assess the frequency of physical discomfort on flutists and a video protocol to guaranty standard and systematic takes were created, a technique to assess flute performances was also elaborated; Step 2 - questionnaire application, clinical and neurological evaluations of the flutists; videos of the flutists performances; evaluation, through video analysis, of the flutists performances by a physiotherapist (specialized in taking care of musicians) and by a flutist with great experience, blind to one anothers results; Step 3 - statistical analysis of the raw data and correlations between such events; compilation, evaluation, discussion and final results. The study group consisted of 42 flutists who answered the questionnaire and submitted themselves to performance and clinical neurological evaluations. The data analysis showed that the frequency of physical discomforts in the flutists from the study group was high and significantly higher than in non-musicians. Although the clinical and neurological findings have shown clinic pathological significance, it is unlikely that the flutists postural physical discomforts can be explained by them. The methodology created to evaluate the flute performances (the "Performance Evaluation Protocol") was proved to be useful, despite not having been statistically proved the relationship between technical problems and postural physical discomforts. For this reason, it was not possible to confirm the hypothesis of this study. Although widely seen in daily flute practice and teaching, the postural technical inadequacies observed in flute performances were not statistically significant to be considered the origin of postural physical discomforts. It is likely that this confirmation may occur in a further study with a larger sample.
