Resumo: | The existence of a center versus periphery relationship in the realm of Brazilian football culture is dealt with in the present thesis. Such a reflection is carried out in light of some essential concepts for the understanding of football teams and their existence, such as place and territory. An investigation into the idealization, ideological construction and crystallization of such a center represented by the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo through the written press, radio and television along the 20th century is carried out. We also analyze the beginnings and further developments of football in Brazil as well as the relationship among teams with their places of origin and the internationalization of modern football as a form of mass entertainment. Another focus of analysis relates to the participation of the major Brazilian teams in the four main Brazilian football competitions: the Taça Brasil: 1959-1968; the Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa: 1967-1970; the Campeonato Brasileiro: 1971-2013; and the Copa do Brasil: 1989-2013. A mosaic of teams and their contribution take a central role in the ensuing discussion about a common popular imagery which locates the cities of Rio and São Paulo as the centers of national football, leading to the creation, in parallel and in the playing field, of the periphery and the center statuses. The hegemony of the center in winning the aforementioned competitions has clearly shown us the fundamental role of the media, of ideology and the economic power in, explicit or implicitly, fabricating match results through the changing of game rules along the tournaments, as well as through the referees unacceptable and decisive mistakes almost always made against teams outside the Rio-São Paulo axis, not to mention the times a competition was won at a Common Court. In concluding, it is claimed here that such a fabricated and crystallized national football center does not bear the research scrutiny, revealing itself just a commodity which effectively serves, direct or indirectly, the interests of those who control the course of football in Brazil. |
