Resumo: | Considering the ostensible use of algorithms in the most diverse areas of human life, this dissertation aims to analyze algorithmic governmentality and discuss its effects on democratic regimes. The main objectives of this work are: to show how the digital devices and tools introduced within the Information Society requires a new analysis of power relations today; to present algorithmic governmentality (a concept proposed by Antoinette Rouvroy and Thomas Berns based on the idea of Foucauldian governmentality) as an emerging governmental logic, defining its fundamental aspects; and to identify possible risks to democracy within this new contemporary mode of governance. This is done through a series of critical reflections on the subject, based on a literature review on the relevant topics. It is concluded that algorithmic governmentality, which undertakes a progressive algorithmic modulation of human interactions and experiences, can threaten democratic processes, as we observe the deterioration of the sphere of debates and the increase of radicalizing political tendencies, within a digital environment that still lacks adequate mediation. |
