Impactos da inserção em escolas da rede privada de alto prestígio acadêmico sobre jovens populares e suas famílias: o Programa Bom Aluno de Belo Horizonte

Resumo: | The present work attempted to investigate a new phenomenon yet to be explored by the Sociology of Education which consists in the presence of students from the working-class families in private schools sponsored by a nongovernmental organization (NGO). These schools are known in the community for their high academic achievement and social prestige. From this wide theme, this work focused on identifying traces of the impact/changes on the social networking of the students as well as on their academic performance resulting from this new school experience. This research also attempted to analyze how the Programa Bom Aluno contributed to reduce class cultural differences between the holders of the scholarship and their private school classmates. The schools where the students are now studying were ranked first and second places on the National Exam/2008 (ENEM) in the city of Belo Horizonte. The data was collected by interviews and by an applied questionnaire. The results indicated significant impact in the social network of the students. School has become the place of convergence and divergence between two cultures: from the working-class and from the middle-classes. Many social boundaries have been crossed, new dispositions have been acquired and many others have been shut off. In the beginning, the students school proficiency is affected by the long daily ride to school as well as by the social and cultural class condition of their families whose domestic life have changed in order to meet the new demands. These students, now called class transfuges1 , are the confrontation product between two different socialization logics: familial and scholarly. |
