Resumo: This work has as a main subject the mixing process in surround 5.1 and binaural formats. The binaural format preparation has as start point the six channels mixed in a 5.1 surround system. The first part of this work will be devoted to a theoretical review in the field of spatial audio, starting with the human perception of spatial sounds in both physical and psychoacoustic perspectives, followed by the possibilities offered by digital audio and diverse miking and mixing techniques. The next step is the analysis of the surround 5.1 system and its recording techniques and also some possible esthetical approaches of the mixing in this system through the analysis of some music and post-production pieces that explore the spatial audio in current system. The third step is to describe the process of recording and mixing some traditional concert music, based on the ambience approach, and contemporary music that explore the surround space and movement in surround 5.1. We also try the transposition of these surround audio to a binaural format using the spat~ object from MAXMSP platform and other plugins just like some proprietary systems have already done. At last, a comparison between the advantages and disadvantages of this transposition will be done, based on listening and coments of colleges and teachers of the area
