Resumo: This study analyzes the phraseological units found in the language of popular print media, in order to show the lexical productivity in journalistic discourse, more specifically, of phraseological components. It was examined how these complex units may contribute to thedevelopment of qualitative lexical expansion of students from basic education and secondary school, considering that such units are part of the lexical collection of Portuguese language and, therefore, must be submitted in mother tongue teaching. We discuss the concept ofidioms and sayings, reflecting mainly the basic characteristics for the recognition of these units in the informative genre. So, the main question that drove this study was: What kind of linguistic analysis can be proposed for these units to a later application in Portugueseclassroom, with a view to the development of a linguistic and communicative competence, focused on the real needs of students and society? To answer this question, on this study weundertook an analysis of a set of expressions present in popular print media, from a pedagogical perspective. Our research corpus consists of expressions conveyed in the news genre and includes sections of Sports, Varieties and Cities of Super newspaper, from August2013 to December 2014. Our analysis discusses the variations that can occur with these structures and their lexicalization through morphosyntactic and semantic criteria. The study isbased on guiding principles of the PCNs and also in the work of researchers from Lexicology and Phraseology, that show the function of the Portuguese teaching, in order to show that these units are essential elements for the development of lexical competence and consequentlyto the communicative competence of speakers.
