Resumo: The specialized literature points towards the transportation infrastructure sector as being the driving force of the development and growth of the economy. With this is mind, this dissertation attempts to improve the methodology used to evaluate investments in roads. At first, two road investment projects, one in the state of Minas Gerais and another in the state of Piauí, were analyzed using the methodology adopted by Departamento Nacional de Infraestrutura de Transporte (DNIT) which is composed of the calculations of the direct benefits according to the Highway Development and Management model (HDM). The first results pointed towards the economic viability of the project in Minas Gerais and non-viability of the one in Piauí. Later, analysis of the impact of road construction were carried out using the Integrated Multi-regional Applied General Equilibrium Model-Brazil (IMAGEM-B), with the data obtain from the HDM analysis, and the indirect benefits of the each project was measured. Using the integrated approach it was possible to evaluate, in a more substantial manner, the social-economical impact of the investments in transportation infrastructure of both regions. By combining the results of the models, it was estimated that the road construction in Piauí would bring greater benefits to the local economy.
