Resumo: This research contemplates the experimental investigation evaluating the effectiveness of an upflow and two downflow direct filtration pilot units applied to waters with low turbidity and moderate algae concentration. Among these pilot filters, one had the filter media with a 1,10m thick. The other ones were filled up by filter media as defined by the Brazilian Technical Standards Association recommendations. There were applied 180 m3/m2xday and 240 m3/m2xday filtration rates in three distinct phases of the experimental investigation. It was evaluated the algae removal alongside the filter media depth, and the correlation among algae counting, and turbidity, apparent color, total organ carbon, and suspend solids have been tested. The effluent of all pilot filters presented acceptable results concerning the water quality based on turbidity level lower 0,5 NTU. Specifically the downflow filter with the finer sand has showed high efficiency in terms of algae removal with low variability during the runs filters. However, the run filters were shorter than those usually verified in the downflow rapid filters on the majority of the Brazilian water treatment plants. There was a lower algae removal in flagellated group, and high removal of Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, and Bacillariophyceae. The algae removal in the filter media with higher grain size place in 15 cm and 30 cm thick for the downflow and upflow units, respectively. In addition to that there was clogging at the end of the run filter causing high concentration in the effluent. The algae removal happened 10 cm below the top of media filter on the other downflow unit. The general performance of the upflow filter was very good, pointing out the possibility of long run filters with acceptable water quality. There were not detected good correlations among algae concentration and the other parameters like turbidity, apparent color, total organ carbon, volatile suspended solids, and even between turbidity and total suspend solids.
