Resumo: What is improvisation? From which parameters can we define it? What is the role of interaction between musicians? In this work I discuss the concept of musical improvisation within the context of a specific performance. In order to do so, I analyzed three performances of Thelonious Monks Misterioso by the Paul Motian Trio. First, it is drawn a historical and conceptual characterization of improvisation within the Western music up to the symbolic context in which the said performances took place. Then, the model of jazz crystalized in the 40s and 50s is characterized and its relation with those performances is discussed. Through the analysis of transcriptions, specific musical processes are approached, always trying to consider the relation between those processes and the interaction between the musicians. Finally, it is discussed the trios methodology in those performances, trying to understand the elements based on the profile of the musicians, especially Paul Motians.
