Resumo: Faced with the phenomenon of population aging, in the last 60 years, studies in the field of aging psychology have been expanded, which contributed to the theoretical and practical extension of gerontology. Among these contributions, we highlight the Margret Baltes theory, elaborated between the 1980s and 1990s, whose principle is the understanding of the behavioral dependence learned. The present study aimed to review the concept of behavioral dependence learned and its application in the informal care context of the elderly. For the conceptual review, bibliographic searches were done using the CAPES Periodic Portal, the virtual health library database (VHL), virtual library in psychology (PePSIC) and Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo). In addition, an empirical study was conducted that aimed to verify behaviors emitted by the elderly and their informal caregivers during the interaction established in the feeding activity of the elderly. Systematic observation was performed in the home environment of 14 elderly and their 14 caregivers. The collection procedure involved the analysis of medical records of the elderly users of the Jenny Andrade Faria Institute of the Hospital das Clínicas of Belo Horizonte, in order to establish the fragilization levels of the sample, and the observation of feeding moments of the elderly where the presence of their caregivers. From the review study, it was verified that behaviors emitted by caregivers of elderly dependence reinforcement are associated with increased dependence and decreased autonomy in the elderly. From the systematic observation, it was verified that the emission of dependency behaviors and less engagement in activities was more frequent in the elderly at risk of embryo breakdown, although this group is independent in a great part of the dayto-day activities. It was concluded that elderly and caregivers emitted behaviors reinforcing the dependence of the elderly and low emission of behaviors emitted by caregivers that reinforced the independence in the elderly.
