This work studies the writings of James Joyce and the way in which the questions of the Irish nation are deah with in them. In order to do this, it probes mainly into Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, seeing Joyce's work in the Hght of its historical context and ofthe Irish Literary Revival, highlighting the role of some popular artistic manifestations of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The theoretical basis lies on theories of irony, mainly those of Guido Almansi, and on Homi Bhabha's studies ofthe modem nation.
