Resumo: In the last decade, the automotive industry has been replacing plastic fuel tanks for metallic tanks. The metallic tanks are impermeable to hydrocarbons, do not need to be painted after stamping and are 100% recyclable. However, the metallic tanks are subject to corrosive processes when in contact with fuels or aggressive atmospheres which, in turn, can reduce their lifetime. One protective method to prevent corrosion of metallic tanks is the use of coatings. Among the most commonly used coatings are the tin and, recently, the organometallic. Literature data about the corrosion resistance of the organometallic coating are scarce. This study aims to compare the corrosion resistance of automotive tanks with organometallic coating and tin coating, both in contact with various fuel systems. Different characterization and corrosion resistance techniques were used, such as salt spray test, immersion tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results indicated a higher efficiency of the organometallic coating associated with the galvanized extra deep drawing steel, when compared to the tin coated steel.
