Resumo: | Altemative antimicrobial susceptibility tests for bovine mastitis control, referred to as TOTALS were evaluated. Four methods showing small variations were used and the results were compared with those obtained by the Kirby-Bauer antimicrobial susceptibility test. In two of these methods, referred to as Direct Blood Agar (DBA) and Direct Brain Heart (DBH), non-enriched milk was used as an inoculum. For the other testing methods - Incubated Blood Agar (IBA) and Incubated Brain Heart (IBH) - inoculum enriqued by previous incubation of milk at 370 C for l5-18 hours was used. The direct methods - DBA and DBH - showed a low bacterial growth rate. Previous incubation of milk resulted in improved performance of the tests proposed. When zone diameter measurements as indicated for the classic testing procedure were used, sensitivity was low, yet specificity was high, thus pemiitting exclusion of those antibiotics to which the pathogens are resistant. . Isolation of more than one bacterial species per sample resulted in diminished sensitivity. |
