Resumo: To examine changes in levels of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) cytokines, after periodontal therapy of generalized aggressive periodontitis (PAgG), twenty four PAgG subjects had GCF samples collected and analyzed using multiplex bead immunoassay for: GM-CSF, IFN-, IL-10, IL-1, IL-2, IL-6 and TNF-. Subjects were randomly assigned to either scaling and root planing (SRP) alone or SRP plus systemic amoxicillin (500 mg) and metronidazole (400 mg) 3 times a day for 14 days. Clinical parameters and GCF cytokines were measured at baseline, 6 and 12 months after treatment. Differences over time were analyzed using Wilcoxon test and between groups using Mann-Whitney test. Reductions in GCF IL-2, GM-CSF and IL-1 and increases in GCF IL-6, IL-10 and TNF- were detected after therapy. When the mean change in GCF cytokines were compared between groups, differences were not significant. The results indicated that periodontal therapy partially reversed the imbalance between IL-1 and IL-10. The reduction of GCF GM-CSF after therapy implicates this cytokine in the pathogenesis of GAgP. There was no difference between therapies in changes of GCF cytokines.
