Resumo: The use of alternative techniques of stormwater drainage as a huge potential for mitigating the effects of urbanization. The adoption of these techniques in consolidated environments where water management is done by conventional drainage devices go through a feasibility complexstudy, involving the analysis of physical criteria, urban planning, performance and costs. The present study aims to evaluate the potential and benefits of implementing these altemative drainage techniques, infiltration trench, having as an example the case of Belo Horizonte. Thepotential and benefits were evaluated, at first, by checking the physical criteria required for the use of trenches and the city characteristics that would restrict the use of these techniques. In a second time, it has made an estimate of the hydrological gains provided by the adoptionof this technique, in order to reduce the peak flow. Also, the study has investigated the possibility of adapting this technique to a consolidated urban environment, based on scenarios of different types of occupation. From the analysis of the characteristics of the municipality was possible to identify some of the instruments to mark the preliminary feasibility studies for the adoption of this technique, what has resulted in a map of the regions where the trenches are more viable to be implemented in Belo Horizonte. At the same time, by the hydrological analysis, it has been observed a good potential for the peak flows attenuation, but wereidentified difficulties in the insertion of the device, particularly in the need of leaving a distance between the trench and the buildings and boundaries. Based on the experiences with implanted devices in the city, it has been verified some difficulties in cleaning and maintaining the system, mainly because of the large amount of sediment from the drainage area. Furthermore, it was possible to obtain the current costs for the development of these devices on the roads and fields. Finally, the study reach the conclusion that one should not exclude the use of this device since it was established, even conceptually, in various studiedsettings, that it is possible to make them compatible in the urban environment, providing gains to the drainage system of the municipality in tenns of reducing peak flow, in addition to other benefits that this system can provide, such as groundwater recharge and treatment of runoff.
