Resumo: The search for security of the patient of health institutions has been established by the National Patient Safety Program designed to improve health care and therefore minimizing the occurrence of adverse events. It was performed a concurrent cohort of 96 elderly at risk of falling who were admitted to a private and large hospital of Belo Horizonte- MG, from March to September 2014. . The general objective was to evaluate the occurrence of falls in the elderly internees who were at high risk. The specific objectives were to estimate the incidence of falling risk and the incidence of falls of patients followed; identify risk factors possibly associated with the fall event. The fall incidence during hospitalization of 96 elderly was 13.54%. the association between the risk factors studied and the occurence of falling was made using the bivariate analysis through the logistic regression model. There were found as risk factors associated to falling occurences: the patient finds itself in post-operatory, presents dificulty in marching, uses some kind of orthosis, shows cognitive deficit and has diagnosis of depression. After the final ajustment of the model, the factors associated to the falling occurences in the sample studied were: show cognitive déficit, have diagnosis of depression use some kind of orthosis. The falls are connected directly to the patients safety indicators. Thus, it is necessary a multiprofessional and interdisciplinary approach, avaling the risk factors to which the hospitalized elders are exposed so there can be adopted preventive strategies for maintaining the health.
