Resumo: Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of the time between hatching and placement (Experiment 1) and the efficiency of the pre-housing feeding (Experiment 2) on the performance of male Cobb® broiler chickens and on the development of the gastrointestinal tract. In experiment 1, the treatments were defined by the time between hatching and chick placement (0, 24, 48 and 72 hours). In experiment 2, the treatments were defined by the time between hatching and placement (24, 48, 72 hours) and by feeding or not the chicks in transport box. In the first experiment the first day of age was considered as the day of birth and as the day of placement, in the second experimente the first day was considered as the day of chicks placement. The design in experiment 1 was a completely randomized. The design of experiment 2 was a completely randomized in a factorial arrangement 3X2 (three periods of placement and the supply or noto f feed in the transport box). When the age of birds was counted from the birth, at 39 days old the broiler chickens placed 48 and 72 hours after hatch had a worse performance than that ones that were placed zero and 24 hours after hatch. When the age was considered from housing, and all the birds were fed during the same period, the broiler chickens performance were similar at the age of 39 days. This indicates that in this kind of experimente the age of birds should be counting from housing. Furthermore, it was observed that there is a faster development of the gastrointestinal tract organs in the first days, regardless the time spent between hatch and placement. If it´s necessary for the hatchery is possible to place broiler chicks until 72 hours after hatch with no performance loss, but the age must be counted from the day of placement. The use of feed in the transport box improved the performance of the birds until 21 days old, but at the age of 39 days after the placement there werent any effects of the use of that feed. Although the feed pre-placement had positive effects on the developmento of the gastrointestinal tract in the first days, it wasnt eficiente for improve the broilers performance at the age of 39 days. Because of that it uses is not indicated.
