Resumo: Based on the ascertainment of the transversality of the land theme in Benedito Ruy Barbosas soap operas, which cultural matrices that underlie this problem, emerge and sustain this presence in the televisual analysis? This is the question that guides this thesis through the contributions of Visual Studies, Television Studies and Latin American Social Critical Theory. The research aims to understand the television in its aesthetic and artistic potential and, thus, seeks to consider the televisual materialities in its relation and articulation with the culture and as expressions of a television style, in constant redesigning. In this sense, the work undertakes a historical retreat in the dramaturgy in appreciation, between the decades of 1960 and 2010, to verify marks and style standards in what concerns of the land theme and its sociocultural inscription. In the journey, the research highlights the importance of Visual Studies and the analysis of style for the formal examination of the television text (the image / text / sound composite), a dimension usually neglected in the field of Television Studies. The methodological movement operates in two stages: televisual analysis and cultural and historical analysis. In this way, the analyzes seek to identify in televisuality in the fissure of the composite image/text(/sound) the cultural matrices listed in the land theme and its importance for the Brazilian and Latin American contexts. The corpus includes the soap operas: Pantanal (TV Manchete, 1990), Renascer (TV Globo, 1993), O rei do gado (TV Globo, 1996/97), Terra nostra (TV Globo, 1999) and Esperança (TV Globo, 2002/03).
