Resumo: | This research explores possibilities of integration between New Product DevelopmentManagement (NPDM) and Design Management (DM) in Technology-Based Start-ups (TBSs).With this purpose, a bibliographical review was initially made to clarify the role of design inthe new product development process. The literature related to Design Management was alsoreviewed, so as the literature concerning Product Development Management, presented inorganizational levels. Particular approaches, methods and techniques to each of the twofields are shown. Then integration possibilities between DM and PDM are discussed in thestrategic level, and the possibilities of articulation between the particular approaches, methods and techniques of each area, placed in the different phases of a generic New ProductDevelopment Process (NPDP). Based in this discussion, three integration proposals arepresented, with its base lines sketched from the organization of these proposals in theirrelation to different orientations of NPDP. The robustness of each one of the projectedapproaches is discussed in terms of a project development typology. The integrationapproaches proposed are also discussed in the context of typical technology-based start-upssegments, and reported to these segments, so to fulfill the basis of this work. The work´ssecond part presents two integration interventions carried out in TBSs, guided by actionresearchprinciples. In this moment, two of the integration approaches proposed areexperienced, with its most relevant results synthetically presented. Finally, it is presented adiscussion which confronts the precedents assumed to camp research and the theoreticalframework. In this way, it is concluded that integration approaches which articulate onlymethods and techniques oriented towards knowledge flaws are insufficient to strategicformulations and to product development process planning, and, still, that differentorientations in the development processes do not necessarily exclude each other, so long asthey can be balanced according to the interests of TBSs. Even when adjusted, activities ofProduct Development Management and Design Management do not effectively substitute oneanother, but, once observed the interest unities of each activity, it becomes possible toarticulate them in mutual support, so that they are put in practice in a parallel andcomplementary way. |
