Resumo: The object of this dissertation is to investigate, review, and contribute to the current methodology of preservation of digital audiovisual files, as it is widely known they are fragile by nature, whether native or converted. Brazilian cinematheques, archives, and audiovisual museums lack a structure of criteria that is reliable, effective, and, above all, sustainable - due to the countrys economic reality, as well as the available professional personnel. Therefore, understanding the history of what we call audiovisual preservation is relevant in a context of ample growth in the demand of file storage, even personal ones, which is translated into an awakening of consciousness about the overall importance of saving and protecting what is important. It is necessary, above all, to understand the mindset and learn about the habits the users of these files have: the spectators of digital films and videos, especially online. The world wide web has transformed into this viable space, with major holders of audiovisual content, but with its storage still unthought of. This dissertation offers a more open look on the internet itself, perceiving it less of a villain and more as a partner in the processes of audiovisual preservation. It proposes, also, that people and libraries consider storage solutions but acknowledging user access and experience. Finally, it proposes alternatives that would be useful especially for public Brazilian audiovisual archives, which lack in resources and present an increasing demand.
